Use a Mix | Yellow Cake 2 Chocolate Cake

Have you ever needed a chocolate cake but you only had mixes for yellow or white? I had that problem a while back when I was making the cakes for my Dirt Bike Cake I talked about here.

I did some Googling and no one seemed to agree about whether you could convert a box mix from yellow to chocolate.

Well I am happy to tell you... you can and it will taste yummy!

Furniture Repurposing | Making a Cricut Table

You know what a Cicut is right? A Cricut Expression is what I own and it is a personal cutter that can cut paper or vinyl. I love it and hope it use it more now that it has its own table!

 As promised::

When I moved into my first apartment this table was given to me and it served me well in the apartment. When I moved into my house and I got a new dining room table it became the catch all Cricut table. The surface area was just too big for storage of the unit and I ended up always setting something down on it.

Did you see yesterday's post about how bad my craft room had gotten? Having a catch all table does not help. So I measured and was excited that I was right about this table being perfect!

I first measured the folding leaf of the table and it was 9 in. That is the minimum needed for this project.

Next I went to my local Walmart and found this narrow cart... and look... it is Made in USA! The width of this cart is about 8.5 inches. I also picked up 2 L brackets. I got the 6x8s. So I spent about $13.

Turn table over

Remove base, hardware and 1 set of hinges
Put table on drawer to figure height. Mark  L Brackets.
I did install my brackets about 1/4 in above the marks I made to give the drawer some clearance to roll out.

Predrill the new holes for the L bracket
I reused the screws from the hardware I removed. Those screws were already the exact length to not go through the table completely.

Table closed.
I wanted the drawers under the table for two reasons. The extra storage. I put my Cricut cable in one of the drawers. But also so that the drawers could be used as a "leg" when the table is open.

Table open
I added one piece of wood that I just liquid nailed to the bottom of the table so that the drawer would have a stop. The table is only going to be used for cricuting so it doesn't need to support a lot of weight. But this allows the perfect place to have a Cricut space when needed and yet have it out of the way when not.

Cricut Table Finished

How I store my Cartridges

Since I showed you how I store my Cricut it only makes sense to show you my cartridges. Those shelves are from IKEA. They call them spice racks. I just didn't put in the front bar and they are the exact deepness of a cart and is wide enough to hold 10!! I obviously need to pick up some more. but for $4 each they are a steal for something that is so perfectly sized.

How do you store and organize your Cricut and accessories?

Small 7x8 Craft Room Redo

This weekend I decided I wanted to reorganize my craft room. It was horrible in there. I have a small room to start with. It is only a 7x8 room and the 7 foot wall has 12 in deep shelves so the room is more like 6x8.

Small Craft room redo

I am an avid curb shopper and that is how I cam across the two matching tables in this room, and the awesome chair! I am all about re-purposing and giving things a new life and new home.

Mondays Made in USA | Silly Putty

This week I didn't have any reader/fan submissions to show off. As you find things remember you can share them with me through all these different mediums:

Facebook: TByrdsBlog
Twitter: TLCat21
Email: bitofbyrd(at)gmail(dot)com

While I was on my search for Made in USA products this past week I was sad to find so many Made in China products in the toy aisle. So I tried to find some kid stuff.
There is a meme going around Facebook with Willie Wonka saying it is as easy as reading a label to buy Made in USA. It is very true. On my hunt I probably turned over 50 items but I found what I was looking for.
This is what I found...

Silly Putty
Did you know...
  • Silly Putty was created by accident in an attempt to find a replacement to rubber.
  • At first it was considered to be useless and was not marketed or used for anything.
  • Silly Putty made its debut into the market in the 1950s and was sold for $1 and egg. Today it is still not much more than that.
  • Silly Putty has also been to space! Silly Putty flew in the Apollo 8 mission in 1968.
  • Over the years the ink in papers has changed so putty copying isnt as successful as it was when we were growing up.

I am sure you had silly putty growing up. What was your favorite thing to putty copy?

If you want to know more uses for Silly Putty check out the 50 Silliest Uses.

Apryl and Bono Sitting in a Tree

Do you know a Bono lover? I do. My youngest sister, Apryl, has been a U2 and Bono fan for what seems like forever. She has carved U2 pumpkins, been to concerts, she has shirts. I am sure she has Bono dreams.

So I made this meme for her.  She is rather tall and some guys dont like that... but I am sure Bono would be okay with it.

Do you know someone who has been head over heels for an artist or a band? Maybe it was you... who is it you love? Comment me and let me know.

Set the timer

I get distracted easily and it makes simple things like cleaning the house a pain.

I spilled all the popcorn. Boo
This is how cleaning goes...

I'll want to start the laundry.
As I walk around to pick up the laundry I see a stray glass.
So I put the laundry I've currently collected into the laundry room then get the glass.
I put it in the sink.
Then I start the dishes.
But in doing the dishes I notice the trash is full.
I go to take out the trash and on my way back I notice several pairs of shoes needing to be put away.

I know... I am a mess!
What usually ends up being accomplished is one load of laundry gets started. Shoes get gathered and one load of dishes get done and then I'm tired and feel like nothing is done and yet it feels like it took forever.

This week I decided to apply the method of setting a timer and trying to focus.
I often set a timer to limit my blogging or pinterest time. I have in the past set the timer for cleaning but it was not successful.
This time instead of 60 minutes on the egg timer I set 90 on the microwave. This was mainly because the egg timer was MIA in the mess but that is neither here or there.

The other change I made was to not clean the kitchen. When I find glasses or a dish I set them in the kitchen area but focused on the rest of the house.

At the end of the 90 minutes I felt like I got more done and I wasn't exhausted. I'm going to try another 90  minutes today and when those minutes are over  then I'm going to do the kitchen.

Do I still float from room to room. Yes. But the overall effect seems more focused by putting off the kitchen and focusing on shoes, laundry, the craft room and such.

How do you motivate yourself to clean? Do you relate to my ADD cleaning struggles? What works for you? I will try it!

Granting Birthday Wishes

Birthdays are funny things. They come and go and I cannot tell you what I've received for most of them.
Yesterday while I was sorting mail I came across a flyer for the museum. They offer great annual passes. They are reasonably priced and I know it would be awesome.
I decided that would be on my birthday list next year.

You know what else is funny?

Facebook.
It has allowed me to live through others in their vacations and travels. I get to see my god sons that live so far away. I get to share my crafting and my family gets to keep track of my sitcom life.
Sometimes it even allows me to be part of a cause bigger than myself.

A few months ago my cousin Michelle walked in the Relay for Life. I supported her walk and I posted about it on my page and some of my amazing fans/readers supported her too.

Yesterday I got to help make a little girls birthday wishes come true. And more than that I'm hoping collectively that everyone can help her in learning how to dream big.
A friend from high school, Dené, that I follow on Facebook had been posting about her daughter's birthday countdown for the last week or so. Her daughter turns 8 this year.

Dené's daughter said that she didn't want to get gifts this year. Instead she wanted people to help her raise money for the walk they do each year. Dené and her daughter have done the Relay for Life, similar to Michelle, for the last three years. They celebrate the life of a cancer survivor in their family.

Her request touched my heart. Dené even reminded her that would mean no new clothes or toys and her daughter responded by saying she had plenty.
She set her goal at only $100. I've donated $10. I think we can help her learn to dream big, set big goals in life and push yourself to be your best all the time.

I challenge you to match my $10 tax deductible donation. All the donations go straight through the Relay for Life page. In no way does making a donation benefit me or my blog.

Here is the link to her page. You can read her story here also.

I wanted to challenge you to play your part in making a birthday wish come true.

Mondays Made in USA | Fray check

This is the first Monday's made in USA post.

Over the weekend followers of the BOB facebook page were reminded to stay on the lookout for made in USA products.

Sarah C. posted these pictures of the product and the project she used it on. This is what Sarah had to say about Fray Check:
My 'Made in the USA' product. Keeps the end of fabric from fraying without looking nasty or or making it yucky. It's going to make my craft and sewing projects easier!

Fray Check:: Made in USA

ring pillow
I've heard about fray check before but I've never used it. I'm glad to know it is made in USA though.
I am always on my own search too.

I was happy to see that a product as American as Crayola is made in USA.

Stay on the look out for made in USA products. Share them on my BOB Facebook page and your picture might be featured next week.

Postcron | Use it, Love it

What is Postcron? Postcron is a time and energy saver. It allows you to preschedule tweets and statuses. This makes managing my multiple fan pages so much easier than ever before!

So how much does it cost? Great question!

Postcron has the plan for every need at reasonable price points. If you are an average poster with only one Facebook fan page then the Free Plan could be perfect for you. I was able to try out Postcron with the Free Plan with no financial obligation and fell in love. I thought the Free Plan would be perfect for me but since I have two fan pages and a twitter to keep up with the Pro Plan fits my need better and for $5 a month the convenience and organization it allows me is well worth it! Currently I sit down once a week and schedule everything but once I finish my update to Pro I expect to schedule further out than a week giving me more time to focus on blogging and pinning while I ignore the laundry.

Now that you know it is in your price range...Free is everyone's favorite price point!
How do you sign up or sign in? No new account info to remember here!

You get to use your existing log in information to log into Postcron.

After you log in the page looks a lot like a Facebook status box. You don't have to download anything or save anything to your computer. You type away... you can share links, photos and tweet all within the browser just like you would with Facebook. I have tried to use other schedulers and they always had a disconnect with links and photo posting and require a whole separate log in to remember. This is much easier!

Once the time you scheduled comes you can see your post in your feed with no extra work required by you.

There has been some buzz about the fact that Facebook has opened up a scheduler feature. Let me explain why Postcron is better than that. When you create a post with Postcron and it is still pending you can easily see your pending posts, edit the content, the date or delete it all together.

Here are some posts that my MK Fan page will be seeing in the next week. With the Facebook schedule feature you can currently only delay your post, there is no way to delete it and while some resources say you can see pending posts by looking at your activity feed I tried it out and I could not find it after I told it to schedule. It seems to be lost in the abyss.

Did you notice that multiply text on the right of the picture? That is a cool feature that Facebook also doesn't have. With Postcron you can multiply the same post to schedule it multiple times. This is great if you are having a giveaway or if you run weekly features like my new Monday's Made in USA or even if you are planning a birthday party and want to remind people of it.

Now that you have seen that you can afford Postcron, it is easy to use and has several awesome features you might also be interested in knowing that you wont be the only one taking advantage of Postcron.
I am, Brittany my blog BFF is and so are these well known companies::

So go to Postcron and start using this awesome tool!
