Happy Sundae! Part 2

mmmm Sundae toppings. They are the extra touch that makes the ice cream sparkle. They give it color and make it beautiful!

Yesterday I posted Happy Sundae! Part 1. Essentially tips on how I threw an Ice Eyes Cream Party. That post really focused on the food portion of my event. But there was so much more to it.

Happy Sundae! Part 1

okay okay... I know it is monday. But who doesn't love Sundaes!

On Sunday I threw an Ice Eyes Cream Party. I have split this blog into two parts. Today will be about the actual food and the Ice Cream part of the event and tomorrow I will share how the Eye Cream Party mixes in and how I made the two events cohesive.

DIY Saturday- Artwork

I know this morning's post about time travel said that everyday doesn't need to be a theme... but come-on... it is DIY Saturday!

Collage Art!
I love having art in my house... but art is expensive. Today I'll explain how easy it was to make this collage. It is a focal point in my home above a fireplace and it gets many compliments.

Supplies:
  • Art print or poster. it can be anything, doesnt have to be floral. I found mine at a Hobby Lobby on sale
  • Frames by using frames that are the same color it adds cohesion to the collage. Day after thanksgiving is a great time to get frames. I got a few sets of 11 frames for $11. it had 5 sizes. I only used 4 sizes for my collage. I got them at Walmart...midnight madness.
    • 8X10
    • 5X7
    • 4X6
    • 3.5X5
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Nails and Hammer for picture hanging
Use caution when doing this project. You may choose to use gloves. The glass in the frames is SHARP!

Time Travel

Every Saturday cant be a DIY day, just like everyday of a blog cant only be a theme. And I love a good theme. That is true in writing...and party planning.

I think a theme should be carried through from invite to thank you note. But if the theme doesnt reflect the person or the event than you learn nothing about them and everything is a loss.

I thought of this today when trying to decide what DIY to post. I have several, many some completed, many not...true DIY style. It then occured to me if I only post DIYs or theme days... you learn very little about me.

I agree a person can share too much but personal interest and attachment is what keeps me interested in reading the blogs I check into. I like reading about the crafts they do and the pictures are fantastic. But I also like reading about the places they travel to and how they spend time with their family.

It makes them real.

I am real too.

Time travel uh.... below are 5 things that take me back to another time in my life.
  • the scent of honey suckle
  • collecting aluminum cans for recycling
  • squeezing two people into a one person chair
  • ice skating
  • sitting on a small piece of grass surrounded by fake flowers
these things take me back to different places with different people. Some places are happy, some places make me miss the people I look back on. The last allows me to keep everything in perspective and recognize that  life is precious and you have to take time for those you care about... because sometimes that opportunity to "call you back when i'm not busy" never comes.

I challenge you today to take a moment and think of 5 things that time travel you back. Why are those things important to you. What makes those things special?

Have a wonderful day in your time travels.

Finish it Friday

What is Finish it Friday you ask? Great question.

Well dont you hate it when you get started telling a story and something happens and you get cut short. That is kinda what this is. On Wednesday I host a Wordless Wednesday Whirl.

A caption-less picture. A story only half told. I hope that as readership and comments grow Finish it Friday will become an opportunity to highlight captions created by readers on the Wednesday post in addition to sharing with you the story behind the picture.

As you probably guessed it is at a graduation.

But the emotion behind this specific picture needed a Finish it Friday. I sat in those very same chairs nine years ago and saw hats fly above my head. On the day pictured, my youngest sister was sitting in those chairs.

This fall she goes to college to start the path that she has created for herself. To say I am proud of her is like a mother saying she loves her children. It is true but an understatement at a degree unknown to my vocabulary.

My little sister is a high school graduate and a college student now. I remember when she was born. I could go on and on. But that is why this specific graduation is so special to me.

QR Code Update

I previously posted about a QR Code... read here... and a commenter...Malena recommended a few pages to improve my QR Code's attractiveness.

I went to the websites. I did a few more googles and then I started photo shopping. I just wasnt happy with the limited options the different websites were giving me.

Are you lost yet? Well a QR Code is the weird box that you see all over now (I saw it at Old Navy today to enter a sweepstakes) You scan the code with your cell phone and it takes you to a site.

It is considered pretty new technology and so there are bugs that different marketing companies are working out... like having mobile friendly links in regards to length and view-ability of the page the scan takes you to.

Based on some of the things I learned I opted to not go with a pink code because codes read better light background/ dark foreground. But I did make multiple lip prints to get one I was happy with and figured out where it could sit and still whisk me away to my desired website.

So here is the new improved QR Scan Code... what do you think?

I think the edges could be more rounded but my photo shop didnt like that and I didnt find a website that did it.

looking at it now.. it doesnt look much newer or improved. that sadens me since i know how long it really took to make such a small change. smh
btw I think the code I found to be able to define my jargon... is amazing!

I found it here through a quick google search of html definition hover

what was the last thing you googled for?

Listening for Lip Gloss

I love lip gloss. Many women do and so in order for me to reach some of my business goals of having people listen... I bribe them... with lip gloss.

I did meet my June goal for getting 6 people to listen... so that means I have 4 lip glosses that need to be shipped out (two are local). I was trying to decide how would I efficiently send this out with as little cost to me as possible and still make sure my listeners are receiving a package they can look forward to that matches the quality of the other packages I send out.

So I am going to share my lip gloss shipping secrets! you could use it for other stuff too I guess <wink>

6 Thank You Note Tips

Thank you cards are a dying form of appreciation... let's try to change that!

Writing thank you notes is something you dont see very often any more unfortuantly.

There are some events where ettiquette says you should write them and people still do in some cases.
These events are most commonly weddings. However, outside of weddings it is like many people have forgotten how wonderful it is to get something in the mail that isnt a bill!

A thank you note is a magical thing that shows someone that you appreciate them and you took time to let them know it.

I have recently received some thank you notes and I try to send out thank you notes for different reasons regularly myself so I decided 6 Tips for Successful Thank You Noting is appropriate.

6.     Look for opportunities to send thank you notes. These are all great reasons to send a card:
  • Wedding
  • Graduation
  • Birthday
  • Christmas
  • House Warming
  • Baby Shower
  • Did a favor ex: helped move, mowed the yard, ride to/from the airport
5.     TY cards are not only for gifts! If you received a card on any one of those events, thank the card givers too.

4.     If you got a gift card let the giver know what you plan on using it for. That allows even a gift card to be personal.

3.     Personalize the message in the TY card based on what you received. Kids are not too young to learn the importance of a TY note. Have them get involved with this too!

2.    Send your TY cards out in a timely fashion. Weddings and Baby showers typically have an extended period of time due to new babies and honeymoons being involved...but other events... no more than a month at the very latest!

1.    Spell the person's name correctly! in this digital age, there are plenty of ways to check a name's spelling...or you can look at the card/gift you initially received.

Above all else... remember...the thought is what counts! So even if you dont follow these tips most people, myself included, will still be glad you took the time to write a note and pay for postage.

These 6 tips allow you to become more genuine in your thank you note giving. I personally believe very highly in thank you notes. I try to send them out any time I have a customer sale or appointment. I also try to send them out for all the above listed events. Does it happen every time? No... but you try your best to make sure the people in your life you love know it no matter what and that can be done in many ways.

Do you write thank you notes? Do you keep them on hand or go buy them for each event?

Thankful Thursday- Goals

I am thankful that I am a goal oriented person. This also means at times that when I dont meet a goal I get discouraged.
Mary Kay ash was a remarkable, inspiring women. She said, "For every failure, there's an alternative course of action. You just have to find it. When you come to a roadblock, take a detour."

She is also quoted as saying, "Dont change the goal, change the date!"

So that is what I am doing this morning. I am recognizing that my goal was not met due to work I didnt put in and that to make sure I meet my goal in the future I need to work a little harder. The goal hasnt changed and isnt gone. I just have a new deadline.

It is great to remember the little things in life that make you happy more regularly than only in November!

Walgreens Couponing

I am new to the serious coupon world. And while I dont consider myself and extreme couponer like the TLC Show. That is where I heard about the Krazy Coupon Lady and I now follow her on Facebook.

KCL has great tips on how to start a coupon binder and how to organize your coupons.

I had actually started couponing about 2 years ago and got my binder and my inserts.

I did it for all of probably a month and then stopped. In my defense this was the same time I bought my house and was temporarily homeless while waiting to close on it so all my life was in a 8X10 storage unit.

Think of how depressing that was to think everything I owned fit in that small space.

A Q what?

A QR code!

I did a quick Google search (dont you love Google!)  for "creating a phone scan code" and in Google's ultimate knowledge it knew exactly what i was talking about and I found this site:

Considering I am an Independent Mary Kay Consultant I am always trying to think of ways to market myself and make people aware that I have a business and bring people to my website to see the product.

I dont feel that I really sell the product, but more show it off and people want it and buy it.
if you want it and buy it ... you can shop with me here!

Back on track...

I was watching How's it Made the other day and I just love that show. It always gets me thinking and amazes me. But the following day I was reading the paper and I saw an article about how a local high school printed QR codes in their yearbook. The code linked up to a site to watch school videos and slide shows. Next year they plan on selling them as part of their senior section so parents can include home videos or video messages.

The yearbook staff printed shirts up with a QR code that directed students to the yearbook website. Since my mind was already spinning from Hows it Made I thought... I need that!

try it!

So what do you think? I think on a business card it might be handy. Did you know a QR code can also be set up with a phone number?! So you could Scan it to call me!

Do you have a business? What ways do you promote your business?

I made the above code using this website BeQRious

Strawberries- too cute to eat

and they are made of felt.

Yesterday I posted a teaser called That Fat little thing. It links to some of my favorite felt food websites.

Helping Little Hands has a great tutorial for that classic strawberry.

But like people... not all strawberries are perfectly shaped. Some have more curves to them.

I felt there was some lacking in the felt strawberry realm. I searched many blogs and found only the cute perfect strawberry tutorials. Well something had to be done!

So here it is...
[I like tutorials with lots of pictures when I do crafts, so mine has lots of pictures]

Pinterest!

Over at SITSgirls today I was reading about linking to other blogs.

I often link to where I found ideas, or where I read info. But I would be lying if i said that I remembered right away where all the information comes from. That is where I end up spending a lot of time googling to find the link again.

Well I found a website to help me with that.

That link actually takes you straight to my boards. Boards are created and customized by you. My boards are blog inspiration, blogs I love, and circus party.

While the blogs I love are also linked here I figure many people over at Pintrest may not come to my blog to see all the blogs I like so why not link it up there too.

If you have an overflowing bookmark folder on your computer or have ever been away from home and wanted to make a note you liked something you might want to check them out.

How do you keep track of your blogging inspiration?

That Fat little thing

... it's a strawberry!

I have become border-line obsessed with felt food and ideas for it.

I have been blog stalking different people lately. People that write about things I am fully interested in and want to write on similar topics and some places that are just fun.

This post is more of a teaser post of what is to come!

I have found some great tutorials on felt strawberry making. I have also crafted my own tutorial that I will be posting. It is not the same as all the others but to reveal why...tarnishes the luster and shine of a surprise.

Lets just say I enjoy realism in play food.

Come back Saturday for a Strawberry how-to!

While your waiting... why not check out some of the great sites I found. Some feature felt food you can buy, some are how-tos.

Thankful Thursday - Full Freezer

That is what I am thankful for today. I was able to dig around and find dinner last night without having to go to the store like expected. I will also be able to cook this weekend for a friend I am having over and premake meals for next week with the fish, chicken, fruit and vegetables that i have in the freezer.

While I love using coupons... in general I do not enjoy shopping for food. A few days ago I posted about summer and a blog I found that had ideas about freezer meals. I think I will really try to do that because having a full freezer and not having to wonder if there is dinner... it Amazing!

It is great to remember the little things in life that make you happy more regularly than only in November!

Summer is Here

My sister's graduation is over. I cried of course. My grandparents leave today. I am so glad I was able to have the adventure of them staying with me.
I have also joined a summer softball league. I am hoping that helps me make friends and get some exercise and have some fun. I have little doubts that all of these will occur.

Here in TX it is already in the 100s each day and so being that it is so hot... who wants to stand around in a kitchen slaving away?

But what if you didnt have to do it everyday, but you planned it for one day?

Over at A Turtle's Life for Me she talks about freezer meals and planning ahead.

you should go read about it!

and because of the large response she posted and FAQ about it too

Well I am off to start my day... well off to wake the grandparents so they can start it with me

Selling myself, I mean my blog

Well... not in the literal sense of for money or even myself really... but my blog.

When you write a blog you are in essence putting yourself out there. And while it is great to have an elevator story (quick blurb about your blog) you also need to have interesting stuff to read about.

This is usually where I get caught. lol. I am not a fabulous writer by any means, and spell check saves my life and I have to proof read three of four times and catch stuff each time... but I enjoy being part of the bloggy world.

As I am tying this I found a fortune I had saved from a cookie long gone. It says:
You have the makings of a leader, not a follower

I have been blog hopping from one place to another and it seems most have the same ideas on how to promote your blog.
  • Twitter something I am just getting back into Follow Me
  • Facebook my preference
  • Blogging Community just joined one myself SITSgirls
  • Blog Hop I participate in Thankful Thursday... you can too
  • Commenting on other's blogs and being an active blogger in general
What are some other idea that you have that you use to promote a single blog entry over your entire blog?

Felt Fortune Cookies How-to

Graduation is upon us. Yesterday was my little sister's high school graduation party. When I was trying to decide what type of favors to do I was also blog hopping around.
Over at Something Created Everyday I found a simple how to for Fabric Fortune Cookies. I commented wondering if they could be made from felt instead of fabric and fusible webbing.
Well a quick Google search showed that Martha Stewart already had this idea.

I read some people's comments and I had to agree...it seemed like Martha was adding in some extra steps and time to the process.
While I in no way created the wheel with this one, I thought I would show you how did it.
There are what I would consider lots of pictures for one how to.

Cruising Along

This summer four cousins and myself are cruising the Caribbean. I was thinking of how I would be able to make sure they were bringing everything they NEEDED and things they would kinda need. A list is the only logical way to do this. And by having it online they can reference it whenever they need. Some things are grouped together under one item number because I consider them of equal importance and should be together when packing

  1. Passport, Driver's License, Insurance card
  2. Women's hygiene products if needed
  3. Deodorant, Hair care products you prefer, pony tail wrappers
  4. Swim suit more than one is preferable... no one likes putting on a wet one
  5. Beach towel
  6. Snorkel, mask
  7. Sun Screen
  8. Sodas, Cooler, plastic cups
  9. Extra SD cards, Batteries, Camera
  10. Clothes!
Notes to the cousins: Since you are all flying here to TX I will be providing the Sun Screen, Shampoo, and Conditioner. We will be getting sodas locally for our car pool to the launch. Think about how many days you will be here in TX and how many days we will be cruising when packing... bring enough delicates. The cruise line says the salty air will make you swell and elastic pants/waistbands are your friends. I plan on wearing many dresses.

Notes to the readers: At this point I have never been on a cruise before so... I hope my list covers it all LOL. If you are an experienced cruiser and have things that you think should be on the list... please let me know! I plan on posting again to possibly revise or praise my list.

I am thankful for my Sister. She is over at Feed your Interest. I remember when she was born and yet this weekend she is graduating High School. People say it will make you feel old.... not quite... I am proud of her and very much look forward to what she will do with her creativity and talent with anything she puts her hand to.
Love you sister.
